Description

IEC 61850 is an international standard for communication protocols used by intelligent electronic devices in electrical substations. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) Technical Committee 57, it forms part of the committee’s reference architecture for electric power systems.

The standard sets requirements and provides a framework for interoperability between IEDs from different suppliers. The protocol operates over TCP/IP networks or substation LANs, using high-speed switched Ethernet to achieve the response times of less than four milliseconds required for protective relaying.

The ICP DAS IEC850-211 gateway supports power automation and industrial control systems. Acting as an IEC 61850 client and Modbus TCP server, it streamlines data exchange between substation automation devices, including IEDs and protective relays, and supervisory systems such as SCADA, PLCs and HMIs.

Users can retrieve data from IEC 61850-compliant devices while retaining their existing Modbus master equipment, reducing upgrade costs and complexity. Data mapping rules are configurable through ICPDAS Utility.
